Google Wave: Problems and Immediate Solutions

Like so many of you I watched the I/O 2009 presentation on youtube (won’t bother with the link). Compared to so many screencasts these days, you had to imagine half of the time what the text was, but you could definitely see the possibilities. So I fired up my own Wave Account and started using it for collaborative projects.

I still see the possibilities and will continue to use it, but I also see a significant number of problems and missing components. Yes it is Beta — actually no labeled preview (note: Google sometimes keeps projects labeled Beta for YEARS), but still, come on now, we don’t even have the capabilities demonstrated in the video a while back.

So let us gather a list of things we’d like to see and when we bring problems let us bring solution suggestions at the same time.

Problem one:
Draft Mode Not Working: I find with the live transmission of each keystroke that the typing experience is hindered. I make a typo and cannot figure out backspacing to get it right.

Problem two:
Cannot remove anyone from the conversation — once in, stuck in

Problem three:
Hate the scroll bar. I hear that they use it for other applications (Picassa for example). It is at the top and my cursor is at the bottom. Yes I’m getting better at using it … but I still don’t like it.

Problem four:
Adding a group … I don’t see any way to add an entire group from my contacts … I should be able to.

Problem five:
Installation of gadgets … I’m zero for two, hopefully I’m an exception.

Problem six: I cannot add a “full” width paragraph except at the bottom … otherwise it’s a reply.

Am I liking it? Overall, yes … so don’t take my comments as overly critical, just things I’d like to see improve.
